We are a design studio that focuses on creating spatial products, installations and artwork using natural materials made from local waste resources. Our work offers an alternative to environmentally harmful materials. All of our materials and products are manufactured in our workshop in Helsinki using unique techniques. We believe in creating outcomes that are in harmony with nature, and want to inspire people and companies to join the bio-movement.
Caracara gets its name from a bird, which is native to Central and South America. Like many birds, caracaras collect ‘waste’ and create their nests from it. This reflects our vision of recycling and making use of what is available. Also, caracara is a type of orange whose peel is one of the key ingredients of our materials.
We collect our orange peels from the juice machines at K-Markets in Helsinki. We also collect other fruit peels, plant trimmings and textile waste, but we are always open to explore new materials. The vegetables and plants for the Living Man installation are grown by Ahlberg garden.
BIOHM is our Partner in material development.
Mandin is a art and design collective that Aleksi co-founded with design friends while living in London. Their work ranges from sculpture and graphic design to material exploration and interactive installations. From time to time Caracara will work on projects in collaboration with Mandin and their international team of skilled artisans and designers.
We have very talented friends with helping hands and know how.
